Azzurri Court Icon Nicola Pietrangeli Passes Away at the Age of 92

The world of tennis mourns a true legend: Nicola Pietrangeli, a two-time French Open champion, left us at the age of 92.

Pietrangeli etched his name by emerging as the initial Italian to capture a Grand Slam singles title, securing his maiden triumph at Roland Garros in 1959 and successfully defending the prestigious trophy the following year.

With a staggering 48 career titles, Pietrangeli was universally regarded as the nation's greatest ever player until the emergence of current star and four-time major winner Jannik Sinner.

"The sport in Italy is grieving an icon. Nicola Pietrangeli, the only Italian inducted in the World Tennis Hall of Fame, has passed away," stated the national federation.

Beyond his two French Open successes, Pietrangeli also reached the final in Paris in both 1961 and 1964.

He holds a record 164 matches played for Italy in the prestigious team competition, winning 120 of them, and spearheaded his country to its maiden title in 1976.

Organisers of the Italian Open, where he was a two-time winner, commented: "We are profoundly saddened that we bid farewell to Nicola Pietrangeli, a veritable legend of Italian tennis..."
